Agape
Unconditional love; a self-giving love that puts aside one’s own immediate self-interest.
Age of reason
The age at which a person can be morally responsible, generally regarded to be seven.
Beatitudes
The teachings of Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount that describe the actions and attitudes of Christians.
Charism
A special gift or grace of the Holy Spirit given for the benefit of the Church.
Church
Refers to the People of God, local Church (diocese), and the assembly of believers.
Disciple
A learner; someone who makes the decision to learn from Jesus.
Doctrine
All Church teaching in matters of faith and morals.
Dogma
A truth declared as binding and divinely revealed by the Church’s Magisterium.
Eros
Romantic love; refers to passionate, infatuated, sexual love between persons.
Grace
The free and undeserved help that God gives to respond to His call.
Holiness
A state of being like God, freed from sin and evil.
Lumen Gentium
A Vatican II document defining the nature and mission of the Church.
Paschal Mystery
The work of salvation accomplished by Jesus through his Passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension.
People of God
Another name for the Church, referring to God’s plan to call people to Himself.
Philia
Affectionate love; affection felt for family members and close friends.
Sacraments of Christian Initiation
Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist; the three Sacraments for full membership in the Church.
Sacramental graces
The gifts proper to each of the Seven Sacraments.
Sacred Chrism
Perfumed olive oil used in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders.
Sanctifying grace
The grace that heals human nature wounded by sin and restores friendship with God.
Tradition
The process of passing on the Gospel message, started orally and later written in Scripture.
Universal Holiness
The teaching that all people are called to be holy and have unique roles in God’s plan.
Vocation
A call from God to embrace a life of holiness in various states of life.
