Paragraph 1 - successful, Act of Uniformity and Supremacy
Success:
- Act of Uniformity in 1558 specified use of a single prayer book and imposed fines for not attending Anglican services. This Act suppressed any non-conformists
- Act of Supremacy in 1559 re-established the monarch as the supreme governer of the church which was crucial if Elizabeth wanted to curb the power of the pope
- The lack of religiously fuelled rebellions which could suggest the compromise nature of the Settlement had worked
Counterargument:
- Many external and internal Catholic threats still occurred
- Harsh measures against Catholics
- Lack of rebellions isnt just caused by less religious quarrel, many rebellions started from societal issues

paragraph 3 - Unsuccessful, excommunication of elizabeth by pope
unsuccessful:
- Northern rebellion caused a punitive attitude towards Catholics
- Pope excommunicated Elizabeth in 1570 and called on all Catholics to not obey her
- Elizabeth passed 1581 Act to Retain the Queen's Majesty's Subjects in their Due Obedience which imposed stricter penalties for disobeying in an attempt to suppress Catholicism
- Mass was punishable with a heavy fine or jail time
- Failure to attend Anglican services would be a £20 per month fine
- 123 Priests were convicted of treason between 1586 -1603
Counterargument:
- The conviction of priests wouldve also been politically motivated
- Catholicism persisted despite these suppressions
