Identify limitations of Case Studies
-Small Sample: Only one individual or small group.
- Not Generalisable: May not represent the wider population.
- Individual Variation: Results are biased by unique traits.
- No Cause-and-Effect relationship: Cannot prove one thing caused another.
- Need Further Study: Requires more investigation to confirm conclusions
State advantages of case studies
1. Detailed investigation of real situations.
2. Observe processes in authentic or clinical contexts.
3. Monitor changes over time
4. Study new or rare conditions.
5. Generate ideas for future investigations
When are case studies in biology used?
When:
-Studying a disease
-investigating a new treatment
-observing recovery after medical procedure
-examining unusual biological responses
Define case study
Focuses on one individual/event or situation
Limitations: define ‘not generalisable’
May not represent the wider population
Limitations: define ‘small sample size’
Only one individual or small group.
Limitations: Define ‘no cause-and-effect relationship’
Cannot prove that one thing caused another
Limitations: Define ‘individual variation’
Results are biased on unique traits
Define the limitation ‘need further study’
Requires more investigation to confirm conclusions
