What are the main ideas of SLT
Learning by observing others and imitating their actions
Mental processes involved in learning which other behaviourists don’t acknowledge
Behaviour MODELLED
Observer IDENTIFIES with role model
OBSERVED
IMITATED and therefore learned
Reinforcement is motivational and depends on rewards etc or consequences
A-ATTENTION
R-RETENTION
R-REPRODUCTION
M-MOTIVATION
Who created SLT
BANDURA
What does ARRM stand for in terms of SLT
A= ATTENTION
R= RETENTION
R= REPRODUCTION
M= MOTIVATION
give three factors which may mean a model’s behaviour is more likely to be imitated
Role model’s behaviour more likely to be imitated if…
Similar to observer eg gender
High status
Behaviour can be observed on regular basis
Define vicarious reinforcement
VICARIOUS REINFORCEMENT-
Person works hard because a friend was rewarded for their hard work
Define vicarious punishment
VICARIOUS PUNISHMENT
Person doesn’t park somewhere as they saw someone else get a ticket
Define vicarious extinction
VICARIOUS EXTINCTION-
People stop behaving a certain way as they see other people don’t get rewarded for it
Define ellicting effect
Behaviour copied but slightly differently
Define the modelling effect
People copy a behaviour they wouldn’t normally have done until they see it modelled
Define the Disinhibiting effect
Someone who wouldn’t usually carry out a behaviour does as they see someone else do it with no negative effects
Define the inhibiting effect
A behaviour is stopped as it is seen modelled with negative effects
Evaluate SLT
-hard to measure as imitation often takes a long time
+apply to society such as social behaviour analysis to intervene and help the behaviour of whole communities
-may not consider physiological factors of learning as well as environmental
+bandura bobo doll experiments
-not the only learning theory as OC says learning by consequences
