What are the 4 stages of group formation
Form- team comes together towards a common goal
Storm- team bushes boundaries, conflict (2 players want to play in same position)
Norm- team resolves conflict, works together, cohesion occurs
Perform- effectively work together as a team, appreciate each others difference
What was Tuckermans group formation theory
when a team forms, there’s 4 stages a group must pass to work as a unit
4 features of a team- Tuckman
Collective identity- team can be recognised easy (kit), gives motivation and sense of belonging to team
Interaction- successfully operate in their own role while linking with other members in team, performers working together
Communication- talking with each other
Shared goal- all aiming for same goal for max motivation
Advantages of playing at home
home support improves performance
away team commits mire fouls, mire anxious due to unfamiliar environment
more matches won at home
don’t have to travel- muscle cramps
Disadvantages of playing at home
increased pressure from home crowd
performers become more self concious at home causing over arousal
players put more pressure on themselves at home matches due to expectations
Cohesion in sport
Tendency for individuals to work together to achieve shared goal
Task cohesion
working to reach target
Social cohesion
interaction with other group members, get along socially
Influence of social and task cohesion in performance
social cohesion isn’t enough to produce reduce results on it’s own
task cohesion is stronger, can produce success without social cohesion- players may not get along but work hard to shared goal
Factors affecting cohesion in group
environment- size of group
personal- ability/motivation
Steiner model of productivity
Actual productivity= potential productivity (best performance group could do) - losses due to faulty processes (things going wrong e.g. bad coaching, misunderstanding)
