why was a decrease of consumer spending harmful in the great depression?

Consumer spending is a major driver of economic growth. When people stop buying goods and services, businesses suffer and are forced to lay off workers. This creates a vicious cycle of reduced spending, lower production, and increased unemployment. As more people lose their jobs, they have less money to spend, which further reduces demand for goods and services. This downward spiral can lead to a prolonged recession or depression.
