why is scheduling so difficult in nursing?
it does not fit traditional business cycle

although many organizations now use staffing clerks and computers to assist with staffing, the overall responsibility for scheduling continues to be an important function of first and middle level managers

what is job sharing?
an employment arrangement where typically two people are retained on a part time or reduced time basis to perform a job normally fulfilled by one person working full time
what is flex scheduling?
starts and ends shift on times that meet ones own need while meeting work responsibilities
responsibilities do not require continual coverage
PRO: great for employee schedule around confined schedule
CON: difficult for UD to coordinate leads to over or under staffing

what is full time equivalent (FTE)?
an FTE is the hours worked by one employee on a full time basis. the concept is used to convert the hours worked by several part time employees into the hours worked by full time employees. on an annual basis, an FTE is considered to be 2080 hours, which is calculated as: 8 hours per day
