Abdominal Evisceration

Depends on the amount; cover prior to rolling the patient with moist, sterile dressing and cover with foil or plastic wrap to prevent heat loss.

Abrasions

Cover with a dry, sterile dressing during transport.

Avulsion

Fold tissue back to normal position and apply dressing during transport.

Amputation

Life-threatening only if associated with profuse bleeding; control bleeding and wrap the amputated part in gauze.

Burn

Cover with dry, sterile dressing during transport.

Flail Chest

If associated with inadequate ventilations, it is life-threatening; assist ventilations with a BVM.

Impaled Object

Not life-threatening unless it obstructs the airway; stabilize it with bulky dressings.

Laceration

If profuse bleeding, it is life-threatening and requires immediate attention; otherwise manage in the ambulance.

Long-Bone Deformity

Not a life threat; stabilize with LSB if high-priority.

Pneumothorax

Life-threatening; cover with a gloved hand and apply an occlusive dressing.

Joint Injury

Not a life-threatening; treat with appropriate splints.

Pelvic Fracture

Possible life threat due to blood loss; apply a pelvic splint or stabilize with a sheet.
