Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP)
A professional who employs evidence-based practice and clinical principles in clinical, health and wellness, work conditioning, and rehabilitation services.
Ankle Strategy
A postural strategy used to maintain balance when balance is disrupted.
Hip Strategy
A postural strategy used to maintain balance when the ankle strategy is not sufficient.
Stepping Strategy
A postural strategy used when balance is greatly disrupted and a new base of support is needed.
Static Balance Exercise
Balance exercise where the COG is maintained over a fixed base of support on a stable surface.
Semi-dynamic Balance Exercise
Balance exercise where a person maintains COG over a fixed base of support while on a moving surface or transfers COG over a fixed base of support to selected ranges while on a stable surface.
Dynamic Balance Exercise
Balance exercise where maintenance of COG occurs over a moving base of support while on a stable surface, often involving a stepping strategy.
Functional Balance Exercise
Same as dynamic balance exercises with the inclusion of sports-specific tasks.
Gait Kinematics
The study of motion in gait, including hip, knee, and ankle ROM.
Cerebral Palsy (CP)
A physical disability affecting movement and posture, resulting from injury to a baby’s developing brain.
Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFO)
Orthoses that restrict or inhibit excessive motion and encourage normal kinematics of gait while supporting the ankle joint complex.
Ground Reaction Ankle-Foot Orthosis (GRAFO)
A specific AFO design that alters the location of the ground reaction force vector.
