Industrialization Technologies
The introduction of new technology in food processing and production that enabled foods to be processed at a faster rate.
Crop Rotation
Dividing fields into four, growing four different crops in each field, and rotating the crops each season to replenish the soil.
Combine Harvester
A machine that completes the three necessary functions of harvesting a grain: reaping, threshing, and winnowing.
Reaping
Collecting the crop
Threshing
Removing the edible part of the grain from the stalk.
Winnowing
Removing the grain from the chaff.
The Seed Drill
A device that drills a hole, drops a seed, and covers the seed in one action, making planting quicker and easier.
Early preservation techniques
Drying, freezing, salting and smoking
Canning
Heating food in sealed glass bottles to preserve it, developed by Nicolas Appert.
Ancient Refrigeration
Preserving and keeping foods cold in snow and ice, caves, lakes, streams, and wells.
Pasteurisation
Heating beer to a specific temperature over a short period of time to kill the microbes that made beer go bad, discovered by Louis Pasteur.
Globalization Effects on Food
Integration of local and national economies, industries and food systems, movement of goods and services, greater diversity and availability of food products, improved ways to transport and store foods.
