grocer
A small retailer selling everyday foods and household items, like the village shop in Merryton.
supermarket
A large store offering a wide range of goods; typically bigger than a grocer and located in towns or cities.
convenience goods
Everyday items bought frequently for quick access (e.g., bread, milk, toothpaste).
comparison goods
More expensive items bought less often, usually compared across different stores (e.g., clothes, furniture, appliances).
online shopping
Purchasing goods via the internet, often with a shopping cart, payment, and home delivery.
shopping cart
The virtual basket used to collect items when shopping online before checkout.
city
A large urban area where modern supermarkets are common; opposite of a village in the notes.
village
A small rural settlement where a traditional grocer might be found.
wide range of goods
A broad selection of items available in a modern supermarket.
everyday items
Goods bought regularly, such as bread and milk.
foot
Travel by walking.
car
Travel by automobile; a common way to reach shopping centres.
bus
Travel by bus; used by some shoppers to reach stores.
hypothesis
A testable statement or educated guess used to guide an investigation.
survey
A method of collecting information from people to answer questions.
percentage
A part of a whole expressed as a fraction of 100.
pie chart
A circular graph divided into sectors to show the relative sizes of data percentages.
floodplain
Low-lying land adjacent to a river that is prone to flooding.
contour lines
Lines on a map showing elevation; areas with no contour lines are flat and near the river (risk area).
tributary
A smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river.
Environment Agency
The UK government body responsible for monitoring rivers and rainfall and issuing flood warnings.
Flood Watch
A warning that flooding may occur; be prepared to take action.
Flood Warning
A warning that flooding of homes, businesses, and roads is expected; act now.
Severe Flood Warning
An alert that severe flooding is expected, with danger to life and property.
All Clear
A declaration that floodwaters are receding and it is safe to return.
emergency flood kit
A ready-to-use kit containing essentials (insurance documents, water, food, radio, batteries, etc.) for floods.
gumboots
Rubber boots worn to walk in floodwater.
insurance documents
Important paperwork kept in a flood kit to claim compensation for damages.
