The Compromise of 1850
Henry Clay’s compromise that admitted California as a free state, strengthened the fugitive slave law, and delayed the determination of the slave status of the New Mexico and Utah territories.
Fugitive Slave Act
1850 law that allowed southern slave owners to go to the North and take back their escaped slaves. This was very controversial in the North.
Stephen A. Douglas
Senator who believed in popular sovereignty for the states entering the union.
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Repealed the Missouri Compromise, created two new territories, and allowed popular sovereignty. Shattered the Democratic Party’s unity.
Bleeding Kansas
Violence between settlers over slavery caused a part of Kansas to be called this.

Brooks beat up Sumner with a cane. Gained Brooks respect from south and Sumner respect from north
The Dred Scott decision
Worst supreme court decision. Declared that people of African descent were not citizens of the United States and that congress could not regulate slavery in US territories.
John Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferry (1859)
One of the main incidents that led to the Civil War. Abolitionists assaulted a federal Armory located in Harpers Ferry, VA.
The Democratic Split
This party split because of slavery leading up to the Civil War. Northern Democrats adopted the free soil party while southern democrats were pro-slavery and supported secession.
Lincoln was not on the Ballot in almost all southern states and still won. This caused the south to begin to secede.
What was important about the election of 1860?

The justifications for secession:
This was the first shots of the war. Lincoln responded with sending 75,000 troops to suppress the Rebellion.

It was the first war with accurate firearms that could kill mass amounts of people easily.
