Peer to Peer Network
A type of network that makes sharing data with other PCs possible.
IP Address
A unique 32-bit binary number identifier for a node or host connection on an IP, represented in dotted decimal notation with 4 decimal values.
Setting Up an IP Address Steps
Go to Control Panel and click 'Network and Internet Connections'. 2) Click Local Area Connection Icon → Properties. 3) Double click Internet Protocol Ver. 4 (TCP/IPv4). 4) Click 'Use the following IP Address' and input: IP Address: 192.168.10.10, Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0.
ICMP
A network layer protocol used by network devices to diagnose network communication issues.
PING
A command-line utility used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP Network by measuring round-trip time for packets.
DOS Prompt
The default command-line interpreter for Microsoft Windows OS, indicating that MS-DOS is ready to receive a command.
Request Timed Out
Indicates that the ICMP packet reached the host but the reply did not reach the requesting host, suggesting packet loss or physical issues.
Destination Host Unreachable
Means there is no proper route between two hosts, often caused by incorrectly connected cables or an overly aggressive firewall.
Ethernet Switch
A device that connects multiple computers together to a network, allowing communication between connected devices.
Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)
A network restricted to a small area, allowing devices to connect wirelessly.
Public IP vs Private IP
Public IP is an IP address designated for a public domain, while Private IP is used in a private network not routable through the Internet.
Subnet Mask
Number that defines or limits a range of IP addresses available within a network.
Gateway Address
Router interface connected to the local network that sends packets out of the local network.
Network Interface Identification
Acts as the address for an IP to route itself to the correct destination.
Class D Addresses
Reserved for multicasting.
Class E Addresses
Reserved for future use and should not be used for host addresses.
