Cognition
Mental process of gaining knowledge and understanding by means of thoughts, perceptions, and sensations.
Metacognition
Mental process of gaining knowledge and understanding about cognitions by means of thinking about thinking.
Critical Thinking
Mental process of purposefully monitoring, analyzing, and reformulating thoughts, beliefs, and judgments.
Declarative Knowledge
Fixed information related to facts or verifiable data stored in memory.
Procedural Knowledge
Situational information related to performing specific activities.
Metacognitive Knowledge
Personal beliefs and understandings about cognitive processes.
Metacognitive Regulation
Personal methods by which cognitive processing is directed, controlled, and changed.
Self-Regulated Learning
Process of assessing, modifying, and evaluating efforts to achieve goals through the use of metacognitive skills and self-control strategies.
Task Analysis
Development of goals and strategies based on past experiences that will lead to task completion.
Self-Motivation Beliefs
Beliefs about a task including relevance, value, and ability to finish the task that influence a learner's level of effort to complete the task.

Closely considering what is working and not working when completing a task.

Using concentration, effort, and motivation to minimize distractions and frustrations when completing a task.
Self-Judgment
Reflective process of self-assessing performance on a task.

The cognitive, affective, and motivational responses people have to self-judgments.
Adaptive Decisions
Decisions that reflect willingness to try new strategies and set new goals.
Defensive Decisions
Decisions that reflect an unwillingness to adapt strategies and a preference to avoid tasks.
