Function of DNA
DNA basic function is to store biological/genetic information
Gene Def
a gene is a section of DNA that codes for protein which then determines a trait
Protein Def
Evolves into a certain biological/genetic trait.
Storage of DNA
the DNA is coiled in around histone proteins and coiled onto itself to form a thread-like mass called chromatin in the nucleus
Histone Protein
A protein found in the nucleus of a cell with DNA wrapped around it to form a chromatin
Chromatin
a thread-like mass of DNA in the nucleus of a cell that is not dividing
Chromosomes
A rod-like structure containing super-coiled DNA formed during division
(sister) Chromatid
One of a pair of duplicated chromosome joined at a centromode
Centromere
A section of chromosomes that join 2 chromatids
How many chromosomes does the body have
46 chromosomes
How does coiling DNA help proteins?
-save space
-prevent DNA tangling
-Controlling access to DNA
xx chromosomes
female
xy chromosomes
male
Chromosomes not ready for dividing or growth
Chromosomes ready to divide/grow
are sister chromosomes
