Circulatory System Test/Quiz

Overview

• consists of blood, blood vessels, and the heart

• also called the cardiovascular system

Blood Vessel Types

• are tubular structures that transport blood throughout the body

• defined by the direction of blood flow rather than blood type in them or smth else

• Arteries → blood is carried away from the heart

• Veins → carry blood towards the heart

• capillaries → the smallest blood vessels, allow for gas exchange

Structure of the Heart

• made of cardiac muscle → involuntary and contracts rhythmically to pump blood (as opposed to smooth muscle and skeletal muscle)

• comprises four chambers: the left atrium, the left ventricle, the right atrium, and the right ventricle.

• artria recieve blood from outside the heart, and the ventricles receive blood from the atria

• valves → prevent backflow and insure uni-directional movement of blood through the heart

• functions to pump blood throughout the circulatory system.
