What is a biological rhythm?
a change in body processes or behaviour in response to cyclical changes within the environment
What are biological rhythms controlled by?
endogenous pacemakers
exogenous zeitgebers
What are endogenous pacemakers?
the body’s internal biological clocks (internal pacemaker. e.g. melatonin hormone secreted by the pineal gland and the suprachiasmatic nucleus -SCN- which triggers this).
What are exogenous zeitgebers?
external changes in the environment (external time giver. e.g. the outside light)
What is the circadian rhythm?
the sleep-wake cycle
What are the endogenous pacemakers of the circadian rhythm (the sleep-wake cycle)?
SCN
function of the SCN?
detects reduced light via information from eyes
function of pineal gland?
releases the hormone melatonin (hormone) which makes someone feel tired
