Motivation
A process that energizes, guides, and maintains behavior toward meeting specific goals or needs.
Need
A state of biological or social deficiency.
Need Hierarchy
An arrangement of needs, in which some needs have greater priority than others.
Drive
A psychological state that creates arousal and motivates behaviors to satisfy a need.
Arousal
Brain or autonomic nervous system activity (such as sweating, muscle tension, or a change in heart rate).
Incentives
External objects or external goals, rather than internal drives, that motivate behaviors.
Intrinsic motivation
The desire to perform an activity because of the value or pleasure associated with that activity rather than to achieve an external goal.
Extrinsic motivation
The desire to perform an activity to achieve an external goal, such as receiving a reward.
Insulin
A hormone produced by the pancreas that controls glucose levels in the blood.
Ghrelin
A hormone, secreted by an empty stomach, that is associated with increased eating behavior.
Leptin
A hormone, secreted by fat cells, that is associated with decreased eating behavior.
