What is a biome?
An area of the planet classified by the plants and animals that live there
What is the tundra biome like?
Cold, treeless, and has permanently frozen ground (permafrost)

What is the taiga biome like?
Cold, largest biome, with many trees; animals often hibernate

Northern parts of North American, Europe, and Asia

Large rolling land with many grasses, few trees, and frequent fires

Central North American (prairies), Africa, and parts of Asia
What is the deciduous forest biome like?
Four seasons, many trees, animals use camouflage

Eastern Unites States, Europe, and parts Asia
What is the Savanna biome like?
Tropical grassland with a few trees and little rainfall

Africa, South America, Australia
What is the chaparral biome like?
Hot, dry summers, mild winters, with frequent fires and droughts

California, Mediterranean region, and parts of Australia
What is the rainforest biome like?
Warm year-round, near the equator, with rainy and dry seasons

Amazon (South America), Central Africa, Southeast Asia

Hot or cold, very dry, little vegetation, many nocturnal animals

Sahara (Africa), southern Western U.S., Antarctica (cold desert)

Cold, mountainous, small vegetation, animals have insulation

A graph showing temperature and rainfall of an area to help identify biomes and climate changes

Daily changes in temperature and precipiatation

A species that has a large impact on its ecosystem and affects many other species
What is an indicator species?
A species that shows environmental changes and helps measure ecosystem health
What is an invasive species?
A species that spreads quickly and has a few natural controls, often harming ecosystems
What is biodiversity?
The variety of life in an ecosystem
Why is biodiversity important?
It supports human health, economic prosperity, and ecosystem stability
