Thermal Energy Transfers

In what direction does thermal energy travel?

Thermal energy will move (transfer) from an area or material of high temperature (warmer) to an area of lower temperature (cooler).

Heat

The amount of energy transferred between objects that are at different temperatures

Conduction

The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that it is touching. (direct contact)

Radiation

Energy that is radiated or transmitted in the form of rays or waves or particles.

Thermal equilibrium

When the temperatures of materials that are in contact are the same. The point at which energy can no longer be transferred.

Thermal Conductor

A material that allows heat to pass through easily. Transfers energy

Thermal Insulator

A material that resists or does not allow heat to pass through. Transfers little or no energy

Closed system

A system in which no matter or energy is allowed to enter or leave.

Open system

A system in which matter or energy can enter from or escape to the surroundings.
