Prefixes
Elements placed at the beginning of a word that modify its meaning.
Suffixes
Elements placed at the end of a word that modify its meaning.
Antibody
A protein produced by the immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects like bacteria and viruses.
Bolus
A small rounded mass of substance, especially food that is chewed and swallowed.
Electron
A subatomic particle with a negative charge.
Visceral
Pertaining to the internal organs.
Inferior
A directional term meaning toward the lower part of the body.
Superior
A directional term meaning toward the upper part of the body.
Medial
Toward or at the midline of the body.
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body.
Proximal
Closer to the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk.
Distal
Farther from the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk.
Dorsal
Toward or at the back of the body.
Ventral
Toward or at the front of the body.
Cranial cavity
The body cavity that protects the brain.
Abdominopelvic cavity
The body cavity that houses the organs in the abdominal and pelvic regions.
It's (suffix)
Indicates inflammation when attached to a word, such as in meningitis.
Organ system
A group of organs that work together to perform complex functions for the body.
Tissue Level
The level of organization consisting of groups of similar cells.
Organ Level
The level of organization where organs are formed from different types of tissues.
Organismal Level
The highest level of organization, where all systems work together to form a living being.
Characteristics of Living Organisms
Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition.
