How long is the pre-verbal stage usually?

About 12 - 13 months

What happens in the pre-verbal stage?

Babies experiment with noises and sounds but don't make any recognisable words

What are the 4 main stages of the pre-verbal stage?

Vegetative, cooing, babbling and proto words

Vegetative

Sounds of discomfort of reflexive actions

When is the vegetative stage?

0 - 4 months

Cooing

Comfort sounds distinct from crying but not yet forming recognisable vowels and consonants

When is the cooing stage?

4 - 7 months

Babbling

Vocal play that involves forming reduplicated or variegated vowel and consonant sounds

When is the babbling stage?

6 - 12

What is meant by reduplicated vowel consonant sounds (babbling)

Repeated sounds like bababa

What is meant by variegated vowel consonant sounds (babbling)?

Different vowel and consonant sounds put together but don't resemble recognisable words

Proto words

Word - like vocalisations that are used consistently with the same meaning. Often used with gestures such as pointing to support the verbal message.
