Peptic ulcer disease

An erosion of the mucosal layer of the stomach or duodenum. This can be caused by H.pylori or use of NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen).

• Dull, gnawing pain

• Burning sensation in back or mid epigastric area

• Heartburn

• Constipation or diarrhea

• Sour taste in mouth

• Burping

• Nausea

• Vomiting (potentially coffee ground emesis)

• Bloating

• Tarry stools

Gastric ulcers will cause pain after?

Immediately after eating

Duodenal ulcers will cause pain after?

2-3 h after eating

Diagnostic Test

• Upper endoscopy

• CBC

• Stool sample

What to avoid regarding PUD?

• Coffee

• Alcohol

• Caffeine

• Aspirin and other NSAIDS

• Cigarette

• Smoking

• Black pepper

• Spicy foods

For H.pylori the MD will prescribe?

Antibiotics

Acid reducing medications
