Electromagnetic Induction
The process by which a changing magnetic field induces a voltage in a conductor.
Faraday's Law
States that the induced electromotive force (e.m.f.) is proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux.
Lenz's Law
Indicates that the direction of the induced current is such that it opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it.
Transformer
A device that uses electromagnetic induction to change the values of alternating voltages.
Step-up Transformer
A transformer where the secondary voltage is greater than the primary voltage.
Step-down Transformer
A transformer where the secondary voltage is less than the primary voltage.
Voltage Ratio
The ratio of primary voltage to secondary voltage in a transformer.
Inductance
The property of a coil that determines the amount of voltage induced for a change in current.
Induced Voltage Formula
V_{ind} = B l v, where B is the magnetic flux density, l is the length of the conductor, and v is the relative speed.
Energy Stored in Inductor
Calculated using the formula W = rac{1}{2} L I^2, where L is inductance and I is the current.
