What are body planes?
Imaginary lines dividing the body into sections used to describe locations or movements.
What does the sagittal plane divide the body into?
Left and right sections.
What are the two types of sagittal planes?
Midsagittal (equal halves) and Parasagittal (unequal sections).
What movements are associated with the sagittal plane?
Forward and backward movements, such as flexion and extension.
What does the frontal (coronal) plane divide the body into?
Front (anterior) and back (posterior) sections.
What movements are associated with the frontal (coronal) plane?
Side-to-side movements, such as abduction and adduction.
What does the transverse (horizontal) plane divide the body into?
Top (superior) and bottom (inferior) sections.
What movements are associated with the transverse (horizontal) plane?
Rotational movements, such as internal and external rotation.
What is flexion?
Decreases the angle between two body parts, such as bending the elbow.
What is extension?
Increases the angle between two body parts, such as straightening the knee.
What is abduction?
Movement away from the midline, such as raising arms laterally.
What is adduction?
Movement toward the midline, such as lowering arms back.
What is internal (medial) rotation?
Turning toward the body’s midline.
What is external (lateral) rotation?
Turning away from the midline.
What is circumduction?
A circular movement that combines flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction.
What is pronation?
Turning the palm downward.
What is supination?
Turning the palm upward.
What is elevation?
Lifting a body part, such as shrugging shoulders.
What is depression?
Lowering a body part.
What is protraction?
Moving a part forward, such as jutting the jaw.
What is retraction?
Pulling a part backward.
What is dorsiflexion?
Bending the foot upward.
What is plantarflexion?
Pointing the foot downward.
What is inversion?
Turning the sole of the foot inward.
What is eversion?
Turning the sole of the foot outward.
