New cards

What is meant by wave particle duality

Light displays both a wave like nature and a particle like nature

2
New cards

Is light a particle or a wave

Light is neither a particle or a wave. We can describe it acting like one or the other to explain the results of different experiments

Double slit experiment

Photoelectric effect

3
New cards

Explain everything about the electron diffraction experiment

Evacuated Glass tube with a filament wire and two metal plates inside

There’s a piece of graphite in front of the fluorescent screen

Attatch a power suply to put a potential difference across the filament wire and metal plates

When the filament is heated electrons are ejected and accelerate towards the graphite due to the pd

They pass through the graphite before striking the fluorescent screen

We get a fringe pattern due to electron diffraction

4
New cards

What’s the pattern for electron diffraction

Concentric rings

5
New cards

How does increasing the potential difference increase the speed of the electron in electron diffraction

The electron is acceletating between a and b wire and plate due to voltage

An increased force

6
New cards

What’s the equation for working out de Broglie wavelength

Lambda = h / mv

7
New cards

Do faster or heavier particles or slower or lighter particles have the longer wavelength

Slower or lighter

8
New cards

What are the two rules for electron diffraction

Separation of atoms in the crystal the electrons are fired through have to be larger than the wavelength of the atom.

Separation cannot be more than one order of magnitude greater than wavelength
