Anatomy

Physiology

Integrated functions of the body and all its parts.

Gross (macroscopic) Anatomy

Study of the form and relationships of structures visible to the naked eye.

Comparative Anatomy

Study of structures of various species, especially traits that aid in classification.

Embryology

Study of developmental anatomy.

Microscopic Anatomy

Study of tissues and cells requiring a microscope.

Ultrastructural Cytology

Study of portions of cells and tissues using an electron microscope.

Systemic Anatomy

Study of anatomy using systems.

World Association of Veterinary Anatomists.

Cranial

Direction toward the head.

Caudal

Direction toward the tail.

Rostral

Direction toward the nose (for features of the head).

Median Plane

Imaginary line splitting the body into equal halves (sometimes called midsagittal plane).

Sagittal Plane

Any plane parallel to the median plane (also known as paramedian plane).

Transverse Plane

Plane at right angles to the median plane.

Horizontal Plane

A horizontal cut through the body.
