Chapter 1 Notes - Introduction to Anatomy + Physiology
Anatomy - “cut apart” - form + structure of all organisms
Physiology - integrated functions of body + all its parts
Gross (macroscopic) Anatomy - study of the form + relationships of structures seen w/naked eye
Comparative Anatomy - study of structures of various species, esp with traits that aid in classification
Embryology - study of developmental anatomy
Microscopic anatomy - needs a microscope (tissues + cells)
Ultrastructural cytology - portions of cells and tissues w/aid of electron microscope
Systemic anatomy - studying using systems (see below)

WAVA - World Association of Veterinary Anatomists
Cranial - toward head
Caudal - toward tail
Rostral - (for features of the head) towards nose
Caudal - (for features of the head) towards tail
Median Plane (sometimes midsagittal plane) - imaginary line splitting body into equal halves
Sagittal plane (or paramedian plane) - any plane parallel to median plane
Transverse Plane - right angles to median
Horizontal plane - horizontal cut
