Explanation for a HIDA scan
You are here today for a HIDA scan which is a test to check the function of your gallbladder. It takes about two and a half hours for the test. The first part is to give you a radioactive medication in an IV that I’ll put in your vein. It’s a very small amount of radiation and has no side effects. After I give you the medication, we’ll use the scanner to take images of your abdomen for an hour. If the gallbladder visualizes on the images after an hour like it should, we’ll move to the second part of the test. I will hook up a syringe pump to your IV and it will slowly infuse a medication that will slowly contract your gallbladder for an hour. We will take images with the scanner during that part also. Most people feel no side effects from the medication, but some people feel a little pressure or nausea. After that you are free to go. Do you have any questions?
Explanation for a lung v/q aerosol ventilation
Your doctor has ordered a Lung V/Q scan. The test involves 2 parts and takes about an hour total. The first part we are going to check the airflow into your lungs using a small amount of radioactive tracer. I will have you use a nebulizer for about 10 minutes to get the tracer into your lungs. There’s no side effects from the tracer. Then we’ll take some pictures of your lungs with the scanner. That will take about 15 minutes. The second part is done to check the blood flow into your lungs. I will give you a small injection of a different radioactive tracer. It doesn’t have any side effects either. After the injection we’ll use the scanner to take some more pictures of your lungs which will take about 15 minutes as well. Do you have any questions?
what’s the explanation for a lung v/q gas ventilation
Your doctor has ordered a lung ventilation scan. The test involves using a small amount of radioactive gas to image your lungs. It is a very low amount of radiation and there’s no side effects from it. The test takes about an hour. After I get some medical information from you, I am going to have you lay on the imaging table with the camera behind your back. Then I will ask you to breath in and out of an air mask with oxygen tubing. I’ll add the radioactive gas and we’ll take some pictures of your lungs while you are holding your breath and breathing normally. It’s not too difficult and I’ll explain all the details when we get started. Do you have any questions?
