Excitation Transfer Theory
A theory developed by Dolf Zillmann that explains how arousal from one emotional experience affects subsequent emotional reactions.
Hedonic Tone
Refers to whether an emotional experience is positive or negative.
Subjective Experience
The personal report of an individual's emotional feelings, as experienced and expressed.
Physiological Arousal
Physical responses in the body accompanying emotional experiences, such as increased heart rate and muscle tension.
Residual Arousal
Arousal that remains in the body after the original source of arousal has been removed.
Critical Point
The stage in the decay of physiological arousal when a person perceives their arousal level to be back to baseline, despite it being elevated.
Interoception
The ability of people to sense and accurately report small to moderate changes in their physiological arousal levels.
Decay Gradient
The rate at which physiological arousal decreases after an emotional or physical event.
Arousal Intensification
The process by which high levels of arousal amplify the intensity of subsequent emotions.
Excitation
The intensification of emotions due to residual arousal from a prior emotional experience.
