American Black Duck
(Black=bold solid color on beak (as opposed to mallard that has mixed colored beak of black and orange), black around speculum)

Immature Common Loon
(grayish head, darker eyes, pale collar, white neck, gray body, you can tell its a common loon because of its dagger like beak)

Cooper’s Hawk
(gray upper parts, black cap, red eyes, brown and white belly, small dark hooked beak, horizontal stripped tail, yellow legs)
immature hawk has yellow eyes
still know its a cooper’s hawk because of stripped tail


Downy Woodpecker
(red patch on head, black and white striped face, small body, short bill, black spotting on outer tail feathers)
females look the same except they dont have red patch on the back of their head

Eastern Screech-Owl
(yellow eyes, gray or red body, yellow beak, small ear tufts)
*Eeny-weeny= small ear tufts=Eastern screech owl


Adult European Starling
(purple green iridescent wings, dark eyes, yellow bill)
juveniles are more spotted on the belly and upper body

females look the same but are duller in color

Male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird
(black face, red throat, metallic green/blue on back of wings)
females look the same but lack the red throat (white throat instead), face is grayish

(more barrel shaped body (cooper’s hawk is more rectangular), slightly squared tail feathers (cooper’s hawk is more circular), more brown feathers than white on belly)
