Sclera
The outer protective layer of the eye that maintains shape, typically white in color.
Choroid
A vascular layer of the eye that is almost black in color.
Retina
The light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, resembling wet tissue paper.
1. Fovea
A small depression in the retina that allows for sharp central vision.
Blind Spot
The area in the eye that cannot send any visual messages to the brain.
Cornea
The clear, front part of the eye that allows light to enter.
Anterior chamber = Aqueous Chamber
The fluid-filled chamber at the front of the eye.
Vitreous Chamber & Body
The large space in the eye filled with a gel-like substance.
Pupil
The hole in the center of the iris that regulates light entry, controlled by radial muscles.
Iris
The colored part of the eye that contains radial muscles.
Lens
The transparent structure that changes shape for focusing, assisted by ciliary muscles.
Ciliary muscles (& zonules)
Muscles that adjust the lens' shape for focusing at different distances.
Tapetum lucidum
A reflective layer behind the retina that enhances vision in low light, causing eyes to glow (between coraid and retina).
Nictitans
A protective third eyelid found in some animals; not present in humans.
Accommodation
The process of focusing, achieved by the contraction of ciliary muscles to change lens shape.
