What is cellular respiration
An exothermic continuous reaction that releases energy from glucose
How is the energy used
To build larger molecules e.g. protein from amino acids
Muscular contraction
Maintaining body temps
What is Aerobic respiration
Respiration that occurs when there is sufficient oxygen, is more efficient than anaerobic respiration, occurs in mitochondria, and is the following equation
Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
What is anaerobic respiration in humans and what are the problems?
Respiration that occurs when there is insufficient oxygen and is the following equation:
Glucose → Lactic acid
C6H12O6 → C3H6O3
The drawbacks are that it only partially releases the energy in glucose, and causes lactic acid build-up, which is toxic
What is anaerobic respiration in plants + yeast and what are the uses?
called “Fermentation”, the word equation is:
Glucose → Ethanol + Carbon dioxide
Is used to make bread with the CO2 and alcohol, such as beer or wine, with the ethanol
