K-Selected Species
Species with few offspring, heavy parental care, reproduce many times, and have a long lifespan.
r-Selected Species
Species with many offspring, little to no care, may reproduce only once, and have a shorter lifespan.
Characteristics of K-Selected Species
Expend energy for offspring, low competition for resources, live in stable environments, more vulnerable to disruptions, larger in size.
Characteristics of r-Selected Species
Minimal energy for offspring, more competition for resources, live in unstable environments, more likely to be invasive, smaller in size.
Biotic Potential
The maximum reproductive rate of a population in ideal conditions.
K-Selected Species and Invasive Species
A species that is more likely to be affected by an invasive species.
r-Selected Species and Invasive Species
A species that is more likely to be an invasive species.
Survivorship Curve
A line that shows survival rates of a cohort (group of same-aged individuals) in a population from birth to death.
Type I Survivorship Curve (K-selected)
High survivorship in early life due to high parental care, high survivorship in mid-life, rapid decrease in survivorship at old age.
Type II Survivorship Curve
Steadily decreasing survivorship throughout life.
Type III Survivorship Curve (r-selected)
High mortality early in life due to little to no parental care; few make it to midlife; even fewer make it to adulthood.
