Precipitation Reaction
A type of chemical reaction in which two aqueous solutions react to form an insoluble solid called a precipitate.
Spectator Ions
Ions that do not participate in the actual chemical reaction and remain unchanged in solution.
Total Ionic Equation
An equation that shows all of the ions in a solution, with aqueous compounds separated into their constituent ions.
Net Ionic Equation
An equation that only includes the ions and molecules that participate in the reaction, omitting spectator ions.
Polyprotic Acid
An acid that can donate more than one proton (H+) per molecule.
Monoprotic Acid
An acid that can donate only one proton (H+) per molecule.
Strong Acid
An acid that completely dissociates into its ions in solution.
Weak Acid
An acid that partially dissociates in solution, establishing an equilibrium.
Hydronium Ion
A water molecule that has an extra proton added to it, represented as H3O+.
Oxidation State
A concept used to determine the degree of oxidation or reduction of an element in a chemical compound.
