Transduction
The process of converting a graded potential from a stimulus into an action potential.
Receptor
A structure that matches a specific stimulus; it must correspond to the type of stimulus (e.g., photoreceptor for light).
Nociceptor
A type of receptor that detects pain; it is the exception to the rule of matching stimuli.
Receptive Field
The area that is stimulated by a receptor; it receives and processes the stimulus.
Two-point discrimination
The ability to distinguish between two closely spaced points on the skin; varies by location on the body.
Proprioceptor
A receptor that detects body position and movement, but does not respond to pressure.
Thermoreceptor
A receptor that detects temperature changes.
Photoreceptor
A receptor that detects light.
Graded potential
A local change in membrane potential that can lead to an action potential if strong enough.
Sensory unit
A single nerve and all its fibers; it functions together to transmit sensory information.
