Mass Media

Communication
The creation and use of symbol systems that convey information and meaning.
Culture
The forms and systems of expression that individuals, groups, and societies use to make sense of daily life, communicate with one another, and articulate their values.
Affordances
The features or capabilities of a technology that help establish how we use it.
Convergence
The technological merging of once distinct and incompatible formats into a single format, or the trend of media companies merging to adapt to a digital media world.
Mass nation
A society characterized by the widespread development of digital communication and the Internet.
Niche nation
A society in which people navigate a more varied and complex media landscape.
Consensus Narratives
Media technologies and products that sort people into narrow niches or subcultures, affecting connections and disconnections among audiences.
Net Neutrality
The principle that all data sent across the Internet should be treated equally without preferential treatment for specific content.
Remix Culture
Cultural practice that allows for the creative transformation of existing works to produce new ideas and expressions.
Top 40 Radio Format
A radio format based on playing the forty most popular songs in rotation, which changed the role of deejays by focusing more on presentation.
Transistor Technology
Invention that made radios smaller, cheaper, and more portable, contributing to the personal and mobile nature of radio.

A strategy used by major Hollywood studios to control production, distribution, and exhibition in the film industry.
