Shu Ha Ri
A three-stage Japanese model of skill mastery, moving from strict rule-following (Shu) to experimentation (Ha) and finally personal innovation (Ri).
Shu Stage
The beginner phase where the learner strictly obeys established rules, syntax, or instructions without deviation.
Ha Stage
The intermediate phase where the learner starts breaking away from strict rules, experimenting and combining methods to improve performance.
Ri Stage
The advanced phase where the learner transcends formal teachings, developing an individual style or unique approach.
Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisition
A five-level framework describing progression from Novice to Expert through practice and experience.
Novice (Dreyfus)
The first level in the Dreyfus model; the learner follows rules mechanically and is prone to frequent errors.
Advanced Beginner
The second level in the Dreyfus model; the learner starts recognizing situational aspects and makes fewer mistakes.
Competent Stage
The third level in the Dreyfus model; the learner can plan and execute tasks reliably with minimal errors.
Proficient Stage
The fourth level in the Dreyfus model; the learner intuitively grasps situations, showing consistently high performance.
Expert Stage
The fifth level in the Dreyfus model; the learner operates fluidly and can teach others, drawing on deep tacit knowledge.
