Rational Number
any number that can be expressed as a ratio of two numbers (decimals must repeat!)
Irrational Number
number that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two numbers, the decimal is not repetitive
Coefficient
An integer that is written with a variable or is multiplied by the variable (15 in 15x)
Variable
A letter that expresses an unknown quantity (x)
Constant
A fixed value that is not associated with the variable (5)
Term
Single number or variable separated by + or - signs (15x, 5)
Estimation of meter
height from floor to doorknob
Centimeter estimation
width of paper clip
Kilometer estimation
airport runway
Gram estimation
paperclip weight
Milligram estimation
pinch of salt
Kilogram estimation
bag of rice
Rate
A ratio that compare two quantities with different units
Unit rate
A rate with a denominator of 1
direct proportion equation
y=kx (k is the constant proportionality y=5x)
nonproportional equation
y=mx+b
Direct proportional relationships
A relationship where one quantity increases, the other quantity increases at a constant rate, and same for decreasing
mean
average number of data set (add all and divide)
median
middle number in a data set (organize data set in order and find middle)
mode
most frequent number in a data set
range
the distance (difference) between the highest and lowest number in a data set
symmetry on graph
when you can draw a line in the middle and the sides mirror
bimodal distribution
2 peaks on a graph, with 2 modes
unimodal
a graph with one peak, one mode
bell shaped (mound)
mean = median = mode
uniform or rectangular
all entries, or classes of distribution have equal or approximate frequencies
no mode =
no peaks
left skewed
bulk of the data is left of the median, but the mode to the right (mean
right skewed
bulk of the data is on the right of the median, but the mode is on the left (mode>median>mean)
probability
mathematical concept that measures the likelihood of an event occurring and are expressed as a number between 0 and 1
probability equation
# of desired outcomes/# of total possible outcomes
probability > .5
event likely
probability < .5
event unlikely
and
multiply outcomes
either/or
add outcomes
how to find the probability of multiple events occurring
multiply the outcomes of each event
cartesian coordinate
how one variable relates to another (an X,Y graph)
scatter plot
correlation between variables (independent and dependent variable)
line graph
trends over time or continuous data
pie or circle chart
parts of a whole to compare proportions
bar graphs
compare between different groups or categories
bad graphs/misrepresentations
title, axes not labeled properly or do not have units, scaling of axes, best fit line too long
linear
straight line
