3
New cards

british parliament, the popular end in England, when news of Cornwallis’s defeat reached London, the support for the war in Parliament eroded, the British opened peace negotiations with the US by the spring of 1782

4
New cards

how would the average British citizen desribe the war

start it in 1776 and perceiving the colonists as bratty/entitled, ends it in 1781 by feeling like lets just get out of there and save money

5
New cards

what was the political/diplomatic end of war

treaty of Paris, Adams, Franklin, Jefferson and Jay meet with important British diplomats in Paris to agree on post war terms, agree on terms for the Treaty of Paris

6
New cards

extends U.S territory west from the Atlantic ocean to the Mississippi River, British must leave all of their forts in the U.S, Britain recognizes U.S independence (the 13 seperate countries)

part of connecticut’s land grab that was in NE ohio

11
New cards

which state is “sitting tight” during the land grab

Pennsylvania

12
New cards

what does state mean

country, the states saw themselves as 13 countries that are loosely connected through the “United states of America”, like they’re in a league

13
New cards

did the USA have more power or did the states at this time

the states had almost full control over themselves, they didn’t want to give all the power to one leader

14
New cards

how many governments existed in the USA

14, each state and the USA as it’s own, the name for the USA government was called the Articles of Confederation

15
New cards

What were some problems with the Articles of Confederation

no national court system, punishments could be different in every state, no central army, states could deny soldiers to the government and this could be dangerous, also makes them look less threatening and easily bullied (like Spain blocking the Mississippi), states having their own rebellions like Massachusetts did when they started taxing farmers on their land unfairly to pay off war debts

16
New cards

how willing were the British to fulfill their agreements from the Treaty

not very willing, the were slow to leave their forts, threatened to send armies back into the USA, and made the US pay heavy tariffs

17
New cards

what was Massachusetts new tax policy and what happened because of it

they started taking taxes on land to pay off debt, this affected farmers heavily and many of them lost their land or had to sell their labor, the farmers started to rebel against these taxes led by people like Daniel Shays, they shut down courts so property couldn’t be taken

18
New cards

List what the articles of confederation said/what power they have

a Congress that acted as a single branch of national government, each state had one vote in it, any action required a 9/13 supermajority, could make coins, borrow money, and make treaties with other countries, could request soldiers and money from states, but states could refuse, had no single person that would enforce any law (a president), no supreme court system to resolve disputes between states or by a citizen against a state

19
New cards

explain what is happening on the spectrum

Colonies pass the vote for independence, which gets rid of KG3 and GBR, eventually leaving them with total freedom, anti-authority, independence, and rebellion, any one state has more power than the government as a whole, the uSA is more like a “league” or “confederation”, that could maybe someday get more power and become the USA
