Death
The permanent cessation of all biological functions that sustain a living organism.
Functional Death
An absence of heartbeat and breathing; a clinical determination of death.
Brain Death
A condition where there is a permanent cessation of all electrical activity of the brain, observable by the absence of consciousness and brainstem reflexes.
MAID
Medical Assistance in Dying; a process that allows eligible individuals to receive assistance from a medical practitioner in ending their life.
Kübler-Ross’s Stages of Dying
A model describing five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance.
Bereavement
The state of loss following the death of a loved one.
Grief
The emotional response to loss, which includes feelings such as sadness, anger, and confusion.
Mourning
The culturally prescribed way of displaying reactions to death.
Anticipatory Grief
Grieving before a death occurs, anticipating the impact of a future loss.
Complicated Grief
Grief that lasts longer than six months and is associated with negative physical and mental health effects.
Disenfranchised Grief
Grief over a loss that cannot be openly mourned or supported due to social norms.
Coping with Loss
The process whereby bereaved individuals confront their loss and work through painful emotions.
Parkes/Bowlby Attachment Model
A model of grieving that includes stages: Numbness, Yearning, Disorganization & Despair, and Reorganization.
Eligibility for MAID
Criteria including being over 18, having a grievous and irremediable condition, and providing informed consent.
Grievous and Irremediable Medical Condition
A serious illness, disease, or disability that leads to unbearable suffering and is unlikely to be alleviated.
Final Consent
The requirement for the patient to give consent again immediately before the MAID procedure.
Audrey's Amendment
Allows someone who has been approved for MAID to receive it even if they are unable to consent at the time of the procedure.
