Le Chatelier Principle
a change in one of the variables that describe a system at equilibrium produces a shift in the position of the equilibrium that counteracts the effect of the change
Change in concentration
shift to opposite side; ex: inc reactant = shift to make product, dec reactant = shift to make more reactant
Change in pressure only affects systems having ___ products and/or reactants
gaseous
Increase pressure will cause system to
shift to side w/ fewer gas particlesd
Decreasing pressure will
cause system to shift to side w/ more gas particles
(For pressure) what happens if both sides of the reactant have the same moles of gas
pressure does not affect equilibrium
Adding an inert gas affects equilibrium (T/F)
False ; the partial pressures of other gases are not changed. Total pressure increases but individual partial pressures do not change
If you increase temp. in an exothermic reaction
-H shifts left to reactants
If you increase temp. in an endothermic reaction
+H shifts right to products
If you decrease temp. in an endothermic reaction
H shifts left
If you decrease temp. in an exothermic reaction
H shifts right
What does adding a catalyst do
does not affect equilibrium; just makes it so equilibrium is reached faster
Removing a product
shifts to make more products
Increasing volume
shift to side w/ more mol (gases) or aq ions
Decreasing volume
Increases pressure = shift to side w/ fewer gas particle
