Illinois Safety Belt Law penalties
Penalties for violating the law include a fine.
Child Passenger Protection Act requirement
All children under age 8 must be properly secured in an appropriate child safety restraint system (car seat or booster seat).
Maximum speed limit
The fastest speed you may legally drive under ideal conditions.
Minimum speed limit
The slowest speed allowed so you may not drive so slowly that you block or impede traffic.
School zone time period
On school days between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., when children are present and signs are posted.
School zone speed limit
Speed limit in school zones is 20 mph.
Approaching an authorized emergency vehicle
Yield the right-of-way by pulling to the right and stopping until the vehicle passes.
No-passing situations

Implied consent law
By driving in Illinois, you automatically consent to testing (breath, blood, urine) if arrested for DUI.
Penalties for refusing a DUI test
First offense: license suspension for 1 year; second offense: suspension for 3 years; plus fines and fees.
Reinstatement after DUI revocation
Request a hearing with the Secretary of State, prove not a risk to public safety, complete remedial education/treatment, pay reinstatement fees, and meet all conditions.
Accident reporting procedure
Stop safely, call 911 if there are injuries, provide info, warn other drivers, and exchange names, addresses, driver’s license, license plate, and insurance info.
Leaving the scene penalties
Possible license revocation, fines, and jail time; if injury/death occurs, felony charges, fines up to $25,000, and imprisonment.
Suspension reasons
Suspension may occur for traffic violations (too many tickets), failure to appear in court, DUI test failure, failure to pay child support, crash in a construction zone, illegal transportation of alcohol by a minor.
Revocation reasons
DUI conviction, reckless homicide, drag racing, leaving scene of a fatal accident, felony involving a vehicle, auto theft, perjury, or aggravated fleeing from police.
Merging traffic sign
Adjust speed and position to allow vehicles to safely merge.
Stop sign rule (where to stop)
Stop at the stop line, before entering the crosswalk, or before entering the intersection, whichever comes first.
Signs identified by shape and color
Be able to identify signs by their shape and color.
Red light with a green arrow
If the arrow points in your direction, proceed in that direction after yielding to pedestrians and other traffic.
Flashing red light
Stop, yield the right-of-way, then go when safe.
Yellow flashing light
Proceed with caution.

Following too closely.
3-second rule
Choose a fixed object; when the car ahead passes it, count to three seconds before you pass, ensuring at least three seconds of following distance.
Driving in fog
Use low-beam headlights, slow down, and increase following distance.
Hydroplaning/skid response
Ease off the accelerator, steer in the direction you want to go, and don’t brake suddenly.
Bridge ice risk in winter
Bridges freeze before the rest of the road and may stay icy after other surfaces clear.
Tire blowout procedure
Hold the steering wheel firmly, ease off the gas, don’t brake suddenly, and pull off the roadway safely.
Skid correction (rear-end skid)
Steer in the direction of the skid, ease off the accelerator, and avoid overcorrecting.
Wheel off pavement procedure
Ease off accelerator, grip the wheel firmly, steer straight, then gently steer back onto the road when safe.
Train crossing after clearance
Proceed when lights stop flashing and gates are fully raised.
Car fire response
Pull over, turn off ignition, exit the car immediately, move away, and call 911.
Escaping a sinking car
Unbuckle seatbelt, open or break a window, and escape within the first 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
