Oxygen
A vital element necessary for cellular respiration but not required for all processes within it.
Glycolysis
The process that breaks down glucose to produce pyruvate, which can occur without oxygen (anaerobic process).
Anaerobic Process
A process that occurs without oxygen, such as glycolysis.
Pyruvate
The product of glycolysis that can be converted into fermentation products in the absence of oxygen.
Fermentation
The metabolic process that allows cells to produce energy without oxygen, using pyruvate produced from glycolysis.
