Vagina
Muscular, hollow tube-shaped organ; functions in sexual intercourse, childbirth, and menstrual blood exit.
Cervix
Doorway that connects the vagina to the uterus; dilates during childbirth.
Uterus
Shaped like an upside-down pear; has thick lining and muscular walls, expands to accommodate a growing fetus.
Fallopian Tube
Connects the uterus to the ovaries.
Ovaries
Two oval-shaped organs that produce, store, and release eggs into the fallopian tubes.
Testes
Organs that produce sperm.
Epididymis
Structure on top of the testes that grows, stores, matures, and transports sperm.
Seminal Vesicles
Sac attached to the vas deferens that provides fructose, an energy source for sperm; contributes to semen.
Vas Deferens
Tube that transports sperm and seminal fluid from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct.
Ejaculatory Duct
The duct formed by the joining of the vas deferens and duct from the seminal vesicle; leads to the prostatic urethra.
Penis
Organ made of sponge-like tissue for sexual intercourse; consists of the shaft and glans.
Scrotum
Pouch outside the body that helps regulate the temperature of the testes.
Acrosome
Part of sperm that contains digestive enzymes to break down the egg's outer layer.
Nucleus (in sperm)
Contains 23 chromosomes, half of a human's DNA.
Collar (in sperm)
Region of sperm containing mitochondria to provide energy for movement.
Tail (in sperm)
Structure responsible for the movement of sperm, allowing it to swim.
Hormones involved in sperm production
Testosterone and ABP released by the pituitary gland during puberty.
Function of the vagina during childbirth
Pathway for the baby to exit the woman's body.
Function of the testes
Production of sperm and hormones.
Purpose of the seminal vesicles
To mix fluid with sperm to create semen, providing energy to sperm cells.
Role of the scrotum in sperm production
Maintains a cooler temperature necessary for effective sperm production.
Importance of the cervix during childbirth
It dilates to allow passage of the baby.
Function of the epididymis
Matures and stores sperm before ejaculation.
Process of ovulation
The release of an egg from an ovary into the fallopian tube.
Function of the uterus in pregnancy
Expands to accommodate a growing fetus and pushes the baby out during childbirth.
Components of male sperm
Acrosome, nucleus, collar, and tail work together for fertilization and movement.
Connection between fallopian tube and ovaries
Fallopian tubes facilitate the passage of eggs from the ovaries to the uterus.
