Discrete function

the relation is composed of individual points.

Continuous function

the relation is composed of a smooth line or curve.

Independent variable

values that make up the domain (usually x)

Dependent variable

values that make up the range (usually y)

Function notation

a common way to write relations that are functions

Y-intercept

the y-coordinate of the point where a line crosses the y-axis.

X-intercept

the x-coordinate of the point where a line crosses the x-axis

Rate of change

measures how much a quantity changes based on an independent variable

Slope

the rate of change in relation to a coordinate plane.

Family of graphs

a group of graphs that display one or more similar characteristics

Parent graph

the simplest of graphs in the family

Parallel lines

Lines that never intersect on a graph; have the same slope.

Perpendicular lines

lines that intersect at a right angle; always have slopes that are negative reciprocals

Bivariate data

data with two variables.

Line of best fit/Line of fit

a line that closely approximates a set of data.

Step function

a function that remains constant in each interval but changes values from one interval to another

Piecewise function

a function that is written using two or more expressions.

Linear inequality

resembles a linear function but with an inequality symbol instead of an equalsign.

Boundary

the graph of the relative linear equation of a linear inequality; drawn as asolid line.
