describe the scapula
a triangular flat bone with three angles, three borders and two surfaces
what is the ventral (or costal) surface of the scapula?
the area that faces the direction of the ribs it has a broad concavity called the subscapular fossa. The subscapular fossa is marked by several oblique ridges that run superiorly and laterally and belong to the tendinous insertion
the dorsal surface of the scapula is split into two uneven parts via the spine of scapula, what are these parts called and which one is superior / inferior?
the supraspinatous fossa (superior - above the spine of scapula)
the infraraspinatous fossa (inferior - below the spine of scapula)
describe the supraspinatous fossa and the muscle attached
the supraspinatous fossa is small, concave and smooth, its medial two-thirds give origin to the supratinus muscle
describe the infraraspinatous fossa
much larger than supraspinatous fossa; towards the vertebral margin a shallow concavity is seen at the upper part
at the centre of this upper part there is a slight convexity.
the medial two thirds of the infraraspinatous fossa is the origin to the infraspinatus muscle
describe the spine of the scapular
A long bony ridge of the dorsal scapular surface that extends to the acromion
What is the acromion?
A large triangular process that is a free end of the spacious spine projecting over the head of the humerus.
describe the superior border
Shortest, thinnest, concave
