A living thing that carries out all life functions.
Biotic
Living components, such as organisms.
Abiotic
Non-living components, such as environmental factors.
6 Characteristics of Living Things

Identifying Living Things
If it does NOT do all 6 characteristics, it is considered non-living.
Organ
A group of different tissues working together to perform a specific job.
Organ System
A group of organs working together to perform a major body function.
Nutrient
A substance that provides energy and materials for growth, repair, and maintenance of the body.
Cell
The smallest structural and functional unit of a living organism.
Adaptation
A characteristic that helps an organism survive in its environment.
Structure vs Function
Structure is what it is (noun), while function is what it does (verb).
Vaccine
A substance that triggers the immune system to produce antibodies without causing the disease.
First Vaccine Creator
Edward Jenner created the first vaccine for smallpox.
Germs
Microscopic organisms (bacteria, viruses) that cause disease.
Asthma
A condition where airways in the lungs become narrow and swollen, making breathing hard.
Diffusion
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration (passive process).
Osmosis
The diffusion of WATER across a selectively permeable membrane.
Specialized Cell
A cell with a specific structure for a specific job.
Human Tissues
There are four types: epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous.
Plant Tissues
There are three types: dermal, vascular, ground.
Atherosclerosis
A condition where plaque builds up inside arteries, leading to narrowed arteries and potential heart attacks or strokes.
Cholesterol
A substance that can build up as plaque in arteries, leading to atherosclerosis.
Ulcers
Sores in the stomach lining formed by the H. pylori bacteria weakening the stomach lining.
