1868-1878: First major struggle for Cuban independence. Wealthy Cuban planters united under Cespedes, unsatisfied with Spanish corruption, high taxes, and lack of political representation.

1879-1880: Second major struggle for Cuban independence. Engineered by Calixto Garcia, resulted in Spain giving Cuba representation in Parliament.

Cuban Revolt
1895: Third and final struggle for Cuban independence. Caused by high taxes and trade restriction. Ideologically led by Jose Julian Marti while military led by Maximo Gomez y Baez. Gomez and Maceo used advanced guerilla techniques and eventually won. Weyler began to use concentration camps in 1896, but by the next year offered home rule to Cuba and ceased to use camps. Yellow journalism brought struggle to American public who were supportive of Cuba.

American newspaper publisher and House Representative who was widely influential in American journalism. Ran the *New York Journal* and basically invented yellow journalism.

Yellow Journalism
Form of journalism that relied on sensationalism and attention-grabbing headlines. Often presented poorly researched or incorrect information but their bright colors and words would sway readers from a distance.

USS Maine Incident
Ship sunk in a mysterious explosion; hundreds of American soldiers killed. The U.S. believed that it had been Spain who had sunk the ship in Havana Harbor when in reality the explosion had been accidental.
