What are the three classes of levers?
I, II, III
Which lever class proposes the biggest mechanical advantage?
Class II lever.
What numerical value indicates a mechanical advantage?
Greater than 1 indicates an advantage; less than 1 indicates a disadvantage.
What is a common lever class found in the human body?
Class I lever.
What connects bone to bone in the body?
Ligament.
What is the distance from the applied force to the muscle called?
Moment arm.
What is a characteristic of the first class lever?
The resistance force and applied force are on opposite sides.
What are factors that help an athlete generate more force?
More motor units, more muscle fibers, thicker myelin sheath (stronger neural drive), actin and myosin.
What is an example of a movement that is NOT a compound movement?
Triceps extension.
What plane divides the body into right and left?
Sagittal plane.
What is the section of the muscle closest to the midline of the body called?
Origin.
What is the change in velocity over time in athletes called?
Acceleration.
How do we define power?
Work divided by time.
How do we define work?
Force in displacement.
How do we define strength?
Force and distance at maximum capacity.
What is the arrangement of muscle fibers called?
Angle of pinnation.
What do we call the action that we say is done on the muscle as opposed to by the muscle?
Eccentric loading.
What is the muscle action where there is NO change in length?
Isometric.
What do we call the muscle that is doing the movement or work?
Agonist.
What is the muscle that works against the agonist called?
Antagonist.
What do we call the muscles that assist in a movement?
Synergists.
What is the study of the mechanisms through which components interact to create movements?
Biomechanics.
As the speed of a contraction increases, what happens to the ability to produce force?
It decreases.
